Main characteristic: all aluminum construction with a 3/16 in. welded hull.

The choice of a welded aluminum hull was not without challenge. At that time, it was not yet known that using an Argon-arc system to weld aluminum resulted in incomplete fusion of the plates. When the problem was discovered, every weld on the Pogo was x-rayed for flaws. When a flawed seam was discovered it had to be chipped off with an air hammer, welded again and undergo a second x-ray.

To further reduce the boat’s weight without compromising the sturdiness of its decks, wood was replaced by panels built from two aluminum sheets reinforced with honeycombed cardboard sandwiched between them.

Pogo is our primary vessel. We preserve her historic value and appearance as much as possible, but because she is also a Sea Cadets training vessel, she is now state of the art equipped.
